Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country, is ranked 25th in terms of the amount of devastation caused by extreme weather events, the Jakarta Post quoted a study as saying on Thursday.

The Germanwatch Global Risk Index 2010, said that although it is a good improvement for Indonesia rising from last year's 13th position, the country could do much to improve the condition

The list said that the 10 most severely affected countries were Bangladesh, Myanmar, Honduras, Vietnam, Nicaragua, Haiti, India, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, and China.

The study author Sven Harmeling said that the analysis was based on the number of deaths and the sum of losses per unit of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The index showed that all around the world, at least 600,000 people had died as direct consequences of more than 11,000 extreme weather events in 2008, which caused financial losses worth at least 1.7 trillion U.S. dollars.
