The power shortage in Nepal has created public woe as state-run Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has decided to increase load shedding hours from the current 56 to 74 per week effective from Wednesday.

As per the new schedule, there will be 11 hours of load shedding for four days a week and 10 hours for rest of the days a week. Just last year, Nepali had faced 18 hours load shedding per day.

Nepal has capacity of producing more than 84,000 mw of hydro power which mostly has gone untapped and it is said that just 600 mw is producing at the moment and some energy needs is fulfilled by the other alternative resources, according to Nepal's Energy Ministry.

Earlier, the NEA had increased the load shedding hours from 38.5 to 56 citing depleting water level in hydro projects and rivers as the reason for the increased load shedding hours.

According to Nepal's National News Agency, RSS, the increasing power cuts have taken its toll on factories situated at Birgunj-Pathaliya Industrial Corridor as production has sharply deceased. Birgjung-Pathaliya is one of the industrial hubs of the country.

Sensing the increasing rate of power cuts that has making public and industrial life at worst, Nepal's parliament had directed the Energy Ministry to come up with a detailed action plan ending the chronic power shortage in the country within five years in second week of December.
