Lombardy exhibit fetes genius of Leonardo and local culture
The famed glider designed by Leonardo da Vinci shows region's long tradition of innovation.

In final two weeks of the Shanghai Expo, the Lombardy region of Italy is presenting both its rich history and modern efforts to balance urban needs with environmental protection.

In cooperation with the Milan Science and Technology Museum, the last exhibit for the Italy Pavilion is hosting vivid images of the piazza in Vigevano as well as a replica of the famed glider designed by Leonardo da Vinci.

The glider - a full-scale reproduction of Leonardo's 1495 drawing - takes center stage at the exhibition, representing the Lombardy region's flight toward progress.

Following the exhibition opening, the Italy Pavilion hosted a conference celebrating Leonardo by discussing the literal and symbolic meanings of flight and the different perspectives it affords.

In addition to enabling visitors to discover the towns, rivers, mountains and buildings in the great inventor's life, the event celebrates the ways Lombardy's past genius continues to inform and shape its future.

"To reflect the theme 'Better city better life', the exhibition focuses on the dual concepts of urban development and quality of life," said Roberto Formigoni, governor of Lombardy.

"It also seeks to highlight the crucial role mankind plays in shaping society, creating a balanced economy and preserving the environment."

Using video walls, touch screens and interactive floors, the exhibit leads visitors on a journey through the region's stunning landscapes, long history, vibrant culture, cutting-edge industry and technological innovation.

The exhibit's themes explore different aspects of a city - how to make the ideal city a reality, creating a connected and productive city and envisioning cities of the future.

"Italy's wealth is derived from the multifaceted and unique nature of our towns, cities and regions," said Beniamino Quintieri, Italian commissioner general for the Shanghai World Expo.

"Over the past six months, through our 11 regional and two city-level exhibitions, we have sought to provide Expo visitors a sense of the diverse, creative and distinctive Italian experience."

"The Expo has provided an unparalleled opportunity to kick-start discussions and exploration of sustainable urban development - moving forward we are excited to build these further," he said.
