The companies in an area, the basis of the local economy, can mirror the industries in the area. Industrially developed areas naturally have more strong companies. An imbalance in China's regional industries has resulted in a massively imbalanced distribution of China's top 500 manufacturing companies.

The map of China's top 500 manufacturing companies this year was similar to last year. Among China's 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, only Ningxia and Tibet have no companies on the list. Although the list ranked companies from 29 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, the top 500 manufacturing companies were unevenly located on the map. Eastern China has 345 companies, or 69.0 percent; central China has 57 companies, or 11.4 percent; western China has 66 companies, or 13.2 percent; northeastern China has 32 companies, or 6.4 percent.

East China: 78 from Zhejiang Province, 56 from Jiangsu Province, 76 from Shandong Province, 37 from Beijing, 30 from Hebei Province, 17 from Guangdong Province, 24 from Tianjin, 18 from Shanghai, 9 from Fujian Province, 1 from Hainan Province. A total of 346 companies from these provinces and cities made the list, accounting for 69.2 percent of the list, compared with 345 last year.

Central China: 18 from Henan Province, 7 from Anhui Province, 9 from Hunan Province, 8 from Hubei Province, 9 from Jiangxi Province, 8 from Shanxi Province. A total of 59 companies come from those provinces, the same as last year, making up 11.8 percent of the list.

West China: 15 from Sichuan Province, 11 from Chongqing, 9 from Yunnan Province, 5 from Shan'xi Province, 7 from Guangxi Autonomous Region, 3 from Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, 3 from Gansu Province, 3 from Guizhou Province, 2 from Xinjiang Autonomous Region, 3 from Qinghai Province. A total of 61 companies came from those regions, making up 12.2 percent of the list, versus 66 last year.

Northeast China: 24 from Liaoning Province, 6 from Heilongjiang Province, 4 from Jilin Province. A total of 34 companies came from those provinces, making up 6.8 percent of the list, versus 32 last year.

Figure 2-2. Regional distribution of China's Top 500 Manufacturing Companies

Figure 2-2 shows clearly that East China has the most top 500 manufacturing companies among the four areas for the sixth year and Northeast China is still lagging behind other areas in manufacturing.
