VII. R&D Expenditure of Top 500 Companiesof China in 2010

1. Research and development (R&D) input by the Top 500 Companies of China increased in 2010.

Among the Top 500 Companies of China in 2010, 435 submitted data on their research and development activity. These companies spent an average of 775 million yuan on research and development, accounting for 1.40 percent of their average revenue, slightly higher than 1.34 percent for the previous year. As for the proportion between R&D input and revenue, only China Aerospace Science & Industry Corp. (12.68 percent) exceeded 10 percent, 16 companies were within the scope of 5~10 percent, 60 within 3~5 percent, 125 within 1~3 percent and 232 with less than 1 percent. Compared with the previous year, the overall R&D input changed little in 2010. For more details, please refer to Table 1-19.

2. As for R&D input, a large gap still exists among companies.

Many of the Top 500 Companies of China in 2010 have increased their R&D input greatly. 4 companies saw a R&D input growth rate of more than 1,000 percent, such as Western Mining Group Co. Ltd, China Chengtong Holdings Group Ltd., Guangdong Provincial Communication Group Co., Ltd. (GPCG) and Zenith Iron & Steel Group Co. Ltd. 45 companies had a growth rate within the scope of 100~1,000 percent and 273 were within 0~100 percent, while 111 saw a drop in R&D input. Compared with the previous year, the annual R&D input growth slowed in 2010. For more details, please refer to Table 1-20.

3. The number of patents increased greatly, but more attention needs to be paid to invention patents.

Among the Top 500 Companies of China in 2010, 365 submitted data on patents. On average, each of the companies owned 464.6 patents, including 159.5 invention patents. For the previous year, 420 companies submitted data, and each had 332 patents on average, including 115 invention patents. Both the total number of patents and that of invention patents increased greatly this year. Patents as a whole saw 39.94 percent growth.
