The Press Office under the Ministry of Health published Wednesday afternoon a press release on the latest SARS situation on the Chinese mainland. On May 7, 14 provinces reported new SARS cases, of which, 9 provinces reported both new cases and new suspected cases and 5 provinces reported new suspected cases, and the remaining 17 provinces reported no cases.

By 10:00 am May 7, 25 provinces have reported SARS cases. So far, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Qinghai provinces, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Tibet Autonomous Region have not found any cases. Of the provinces having reported suspected or confirmed SARS cases, Heilongjiang Province still reports no diagnosed case; Fujian Province has had no reported case for 29 days while Shandong Province has reported no new case for 13 days. What's more, since April 21, Liaoning, Zhejiang and Hunan provinces have reported no new cases for 16 successive days and Jiangsu Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have reported no new case for 5 successive days.

From 10:00 am May 6 to 10:00 am May 7, China reported 159 new cases, 27 patients recovered and 5 deaths. Of the 159 cases, 91 were suspected cases and now confirmed as SARS patients.

Of these figures:

Beijing reported 97 new cases (of which 57 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 7 patients recovered and 3 deaths

Tianjin reported 7 new cases (all of which used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients)

Hebei reported 21 new cases (of which 12 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients) and 2 patients recovered

Shanxi reported 9 new cases (of which 7 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients) and 10 patients recovered

Inner Mongolia reported 7 new cases (of which 2 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 3 patients recovered and 2 deaths

Jilin reported 2 new cases (all of which were suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients)

Henan reported 1 new case

Guangdong reported 13 new cases (of which 2 were used to be suspected but now are confirmed SARS patients) and 5 patients recovered

Chongqing reported 2 new cases (all of which were suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients)

By 10:00 am May 7, China had a total of 4,560 SARS cases (901 medical workers), which included 1,487 patients who had recovered and been discharged from hospital and 219 deaths. Beijing reported 8 patients who had been misdiagnosed with SARS (2 medical workers; 3 remaining suspected cases). Now 2,854 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals.

From 10:00 am May 6 to 10:00 am May 7, China also reported 204 new suspected cases, including 97 from Beijing, 9 from Tianjin, 11 from Hebei, 18 from Shanxi, 17 from Inner Mongolia, 2 from Jilin, 3 from Shanghai, 2 from Jiangsu, 1 from Fujian, 1 from Henan, 38 from Guangdong, 1 from Chongqing, 3 from Shaanxi and 1 from Gansu.

From 10:00 am May 6 to 10:00 am May 7, China reported 92 misdiagnosed suspected cases, of which, 49 from Beijing, 22 from Guangdong, 6 from Shanxi, 5 from Inner Mongolia, 3 from Hebei, 2 from Shanghai, 2 from Anhui, and 1 each from Hubei, Hunan and Sichuan. By 10:00 am May 7, China had a total of 2,666 suspected cases.
