The Press Office under the Ministry of Health published Monday afternoon a press release in the latest SARS situation on the Chinese mainland. On May 5, 14 provinces reported new SARS cases, of which, 9 provinces reported both new SARS cases and new suspected cases and 5 provinces reported new suspected SARS cases, and the remaining 17 provinces reported no case. By 10:00 am of May 5, 26 provinces have reported SARS cases. So far, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Qinghai provinces and Tibet Autonomous Region have not found any SARS cases. In addition, Fujian Province has reported no new case for 27 days while Shandong Province has reported no new case for 11 days. What's more, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Zhejiang, Hunan provinces and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have reported no new case for 5 successive days.

From 10:00 am of May 4 to 10:00 am of May 5, China reported 160 new cases, 17 patients recovered and 9 deaths. Of the 160 cases, 88 used to be suspected cases and now are confirmed as SARS patients.

Of these figures:

Beijing reported 98 new cases (of which 58 used to be suspected cases and now are confirmed as SARS patients), 3 patients recovered and 3 deaths

Tianjin reported 9 new cases and 1 death

Hebei reported 9 new cases (of which 6 used to be suspected cases and now are confirmed as SARS patients) and one patient recovered

Shanxi reported 21 new cases (of which 16 used to be suspected cases and now are confirmed as SARS patients) and 2 deaths

Inner Mongolia reported 6 new cases (of which 4 used to be suspected cases and now are confirmed as SARS patients) and 4 patients recovered

Jilin reported 3 new cases (all of whom used to be suspected cases and now are confirmed as SARS patients)

Anhui reported 1 new cases

Henan reported 1 patient recovered

Guangdong reported 12 new cases (of which 1 used to be suspected case and now is confirmed as SARS patient), 8 patients recovered and 3 deaths

Shaanxi reported 1 new case

By 10:00 am of May 5, China had a total of 4,280 SARS cases (including 851 medical workers), which included 1,433 patients who had recovered and been discharged from hospital and 206 deaths. Beijing reported 4 patients who had been falsely diagnosed with SARS. Inner Mongolia took 1 case off the total list of the confirmed SARS cases, which had been reported twice. Now 2,641 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals.

From 10:00 am of May 4 to 10:00 am of May 5, China also reported 177 new suspected cases, including 65 from Beijing, 14 from Tianjin, 21 from Hebei, 12 from Shanxi, 15 from Inner Mongolia, 1 from Liaoning, 1 from Jilin, 1 from Shanghai, 1 from Jiangsu, 2 from Anhui, 1 from Henan, 40 from Guangdong, 2 from Sichuan and 1 from Shaanxi.

From 10:00 am of May 4 to 10:00 am of May 5, China reported 84 patients who had been falsely diagnosed with suspected cases, of which, 34 from Beijing, 20 from Shanxi, 7 from Hebei, 4 from Inner Mongolia, 4 from Shanghai, 4 from Guangdong, 3 from Tianjin, 3 from Sichuan, 3 from Shaanxi, 1 from Henan and 1 from Guangxi. By 10:00 am of May 5, China had a total of 2,604 suspected cases.
