China Lures Overseas Professionals
China is strengthening the construction of a global system for the exchange of professionals to meet the needs for overseas experts following its entry into the World Trade Organization.

Wan Xueyuan, head of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, made the remarks at an international conference on professional exchanges yesterday in Nanjing, capital of East China's Jiangsu Province.

Following a successful one-year trial, China has opened an international professionals' market in the Zhongguancun area of Beijing to provide a year-around platform to talk over the business of inviting foreign experts, he said.

In addition, Wan's administration has decided to hold the international professional exchange conference on an annual basis in Nanjing, creating a person-to-person opportunity to meet the needs of both supply and demand.

And with a website dedicated to information verification and online discussion, an all-round, market-orientated system has taken shape to address the need for foreign experts in the country, Wan announced.

"China's development, prosperity and stability will provide a broad stage for professionals to make a career," said Xu Jialu, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

The three-day conference on international exchange of professionals has attracted at least 200 foreign expert organizations and overseas training organizations. More than 4,000 delegates from home and abroad have participated in the conference, including over 800 foreign delegates.

For the first time, overseas Chinese scholars participated in the conference to complement the delegates.

The conference specifically created a section for the 276 overseas Chinese scholars to find potential partners. These particular delegates have brought 374 projects to the conference, spanning the fields of IT, biotechnology, pharmacology, production industry, environmental protection and agriculture.

At the opening ceremony, the country's first regional international professional market was established in Nanjing.

The State administration also awarded recognition certificates to 37 foreign organizations, qualified to be involved with the international exchange of professionals in China.
