Government Destroyed 27.5 Million Illegal Discs
The Ministry of Culture Tuesday destroyed 27.5 million illegal audio and video recordings in major Chinese cities. These are just part of the 43.45 million pirated and smuggled discs that have been seized in the first half of this year, according to Vice-Minister of Culture Zhao Weisui.

The Ministry of Culture Tuesday destroyed 27.5 million illegal audio and video recordings in major Chinese cities. These are just part of the 43.45 million pirated and smuggled discs that have been seized in the first half of this year, according to Vice-Minister of Culture Zhao Weisui.
Chinese Porcelain Ready for US President
At a dinner during their visit to China in February, US President Bush and first lady, Laura, admired a set of porcelain. The genre as pictured, is known as Jixiang ruyi which means "blessed and lucky" in Chinese. And now a set in this exquisite style, produced by Jingdezhen Ceramics, is to be presented to them by Chinese President Jiang Zemin during his US visit this fall.
Hunan Hit by Severe Flood, Landslides
Massive landslides and flooding, caused by excessive and heavy rainfall, have hit parts of central China's Hunan Province since Tuesday, causing 70 deaths and an economic loss of 2 billion yuan (US$240 million) so far. This is the fiercest flood the regions have experienced since 1998, according to Feng Jin, an official with the provincial government.
Proposal on Taiwan's UN Representation Opposed
China expressed Friday strong indignation and resolute opposition to a proposal by a small number of countries for the so-called "Taiwan representation in the United Nations." This is a serious violation of the purpose and principles of the UN Charter, an infringement of China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and an interference in China's internal affairs, said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan.
Stephen Hawking to Lecture in China
Stephen Hawking, the world-renowned physicist, will give a lecture at Zhejiang University in east China to explain some of his key doctrines. He is to attend the upcoming International Congress of Mathematicians 2002 in Beijing.
China's Woman Cyclist Sets World Record
China's cyclist Jiang Yonghua broke the world record on her way to winning the women's 500-meter time trial at the 2002 Track Cycling World Cup Sunday in Kunming, Yunnan Province. Her time of 34 seconds bettered the previous mark of 34.010 seconds set by French Felicia Ballanger in 1998.
China-Israel Agriculture Cooperation Under Way
The signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the Development of the Sino-Israeli Demonstration and Training Center for Agriculture in Drylands was held in Beijing Monday. This will have a big impact on the development of agriculture in China's western region, said Han Changfu, vice-minister of agriculture.
