        China, Russia Favor Afghan Government with Broad Support
        Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan and Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov agreed during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Ministerial Meeting in Shanghai Wednesday that the future government of Afghanistan should enjoy broad support and represent the interests of all ethnic groups in the country.
        Business Elites Gather in Shanghai
        The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit 2001 opened in Shanghai Thursday afternoon with the presence of some 500 chief executive officers and general managers of over 300 overseas big companies and 80 Chinese enterprises. Qian Qichen, vice premier of China, welcomed the businesses leaders on behalf of the Chinese government.
        APEC Ministers Meet
        The 13th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meeting opened Wednesday morning at the Shanghai International Convention Center. In his welcoming address, Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan, co-chair of the meeting with Chinese Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Shi Guangsheng, said that APEC has made remarkable achievements while expanding regional cooperation over the past decade.
        China to Build Its First Research Station at North Pole
        A Chinese scientific expedition left Beijing Tuesday morning for the North Pole to build the nation's first research station on Norway's Svalbad Islands within the Arctic Circle. Upon its completion, the research station will provide Chinese scientists with accommodations and continuous monitoring and communication capabilities.
        Chinese Patriot Dies at 101
        Zhang Xueliang, a great Chinese patriot, died at the age of 101 on Sunday at his residence in Hawaii in the United States. President Jiang Zemin has sent a message of condolence to relatives of the former general.
        APEC Adopts e-Strategy to Further Goals
        The Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) yesterday endorsed an e-APEC strategy for the development of a digital society in the Asia-Pacific region that will help create an environment for strengthening market structures and institutions within the APEC economies.
        White Paper Issued
        On Rural Poverty-relief
        The State Council Information Office issued today a white paper on the country's development-oriented poverty reduction program for rural China. Between 1978 and 2000, the number of poverty-stricken people living in rural areas without enough to eat and wear decreased from 250 million to 30 million, and the proportion of poverty-stricken people in the total rural population dropped from 30.7 percent to about three percent.
        China to Focus on Moon, Deep Space Exploration
        China will focus on research on the moon and deep space, said Luan Enjie, director of the State Aerospace Bureau at the ongoing China Industrial Hi-tech Forum. Luan expanded on the annoucement earlier this month of China’s plans for a moon probe launched on Long March rockets.
        Flood-Control Project on Yangtze River Drawn up
        An ambitious scheme, aimed at reducing the risk of devastating floods on the Yangtze River, the world's third longest in China, has been drawn up by scientists, officials of the United Nations Environment Program said on Saturday. The full project, costing US$10 million, is scheduled to begin in May 2003.
        ROK Pledges to Punish Snakeheads
        Severe punishment will be meted out to the perpetrators of the human trafficking scandal which led to the deaths of 25 Chinese stowaways at sea off the Korean peninsula. The promise came from the government of Republic of Korea which also vowed to properly handle the remaining problems of the tragedy.
        Shanghai Ready for APEC
        The host metropolis is prepared and counting down the days to next week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, according to Shanghai Mayor Xu Kuangdi. More than 10,000 English-speaking volunteers will assist guests, most of whom will be housed in some 20 four- and five-star hotels, as they participate in the meetings of the international forum.
        Hopes for Afghan Coalition Expressed
        It would be beneficial to the Afghan people and conducive to regional peace and stability if an Afghan coalition government could be established that was acceptable to all parties and able to cooperate with neighboring countries in a friendly manner, according to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Sun Yuxi on October 11.
