Public transportation: 44 %

Beijing is making more efforts to develop its public transportation network and relieve traffic congestion, with 46 percent of its residents expected to travel by subway and bus in 2013. In 2012, 20.6 million daily journeys were made by public transport, and 44 percent of commuters used public transportation. The proportion was the highest in the country in 2012, and is expected to hit 50 percent by 2015.

Beijing has a total of 779 bus routes in operation in 2012, 30 more than that of 2011. It has 22,146 buses on the road, handling 5.2 billion commuters annually. In the past five years, Beijing constructed 300-kilometer-long urban rail transit lines with about 190 billion yuan (US$30.2 billion) in investments. It now has 16 subway lines with a combined length of 442 kilometers, the longest in China, and the length will reach 465 kilometers by the end of 2013. The number of subway lines in the city will reach 19 by 2015, with a total length of 660 kilometers. By 2020, the total subway length is expected to increase to 1,000 kilometers.
