Police in Pingdingshan, Henan Province, have come under criticism from local students for being too slow to respond to a traffic accident in which a university student was killed.

The criticism has come despite the police offering a reward of 50,000 yuan ($7,500) to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest of the driver who fled after the accident Sunday afternoon.

The victim, surnamed Guo, is a junior mathematics student at Pingdingshan University, the Guangzhou Daily reported Wednesday. No one witnessed the incident.

One of Guo's schoolmates came across her body on the street and called the police and an ambulance. Some students formed a human wall to cordon off the site.

Students at the university complained about the slow response of the police and ambulance services, the report said.

"It took them one and a half hours to get here when it is just a five-minute drive away," a student told the paper.

Calls by the Global Times Wednesday to the public security bureau went unanswered.

A teacher of the university surnamed Tian told the Global Times that the scene of the acci-dent is about 500 meters from the campus.

"There have been several car accidents there," Tian said.

Tian said the university promised to pay 520,000 yuan ($77,976) in compensation to Guo's family.
