UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday said that Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant accident indicated "large gaps" in the international community's efforts to deal with safety breaches.

"Fukushima has raised questions on nuclear safety, and the future of nuclear use," Ban said while addressing the Third Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction here in Geneva.

"Recent events suggest that there are large gaps in how societies and the international system think and act about breaches to nuclear safety," he said.

The secretary-general also announced a high-level meeting on the safe use of nuclear power on Sept. 22 during a regular session of the UN General Assembly.

Before Geneva, Ban had previously traveled to Bulgaria and Turkey for a week-long Europe tour. He would also attend the opening of the 2nd International Forum on Sport for Peace and Development while in Geneva, earlier reports said.
