Ukraine is prepared to dispatch a group of 45 rescuers to quake-stricken Japan, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said Monday.

"A group of 45 Ukrainian rescuers are ready to fly to Japan's quake-hit regions. They have special equipment for rescue after a devastating earthquake," Alexander Dykusarov told a press conference.

Ukraine is also ready to provide assistance of its nuclear power experts to Tokyo, the spokesman said.

Hydrogen explosions hit two reactors at the Fukushima nuclear plant in quake-hit northeastern Japan. Japanese engineers and rescuers have fought arduously to prevent a nuclear catastrophe.

"Ukraine has rich experiences in overcoming effects of radioactive pollution acquired during the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. A group of Ukrainian engineers are ready to fly to Japan as early as possible," he said.

"Ukraine's embassy in Tokyo is working around the clock. It is monitoring the situation in Japan after the earthquake, which caused a lot of deaths and devastation."

A 9.0-magnitude powerful quake and subsequent tsunami hit northeastern Japan on Friday, killing over 1,800 people and leaving thousands others missing.
