Peruvian doctors have been conducting 80 surgeries daily at a hospital near the border between quake-stricken Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the Peruvian health ministry said Tuesday.

Peruvian doctors, along with their partners from Japan, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, are working at El Buen Samaritano Hospital in the city of Jimani.

"We just finished shift duty. We have been working at night and operated on 10 patients, which makes the daily number of surgeries reach 80," said Carlos Malpica, director of Mobilization of General Office of National Defence of Health Ministry.

"The attentions for traumatic injures must be given in the first 24 or 48 hours," said Malpica. But "we are receiving patients after almost one week. It is frustrating to see people have operations to cut one part of their body, because they arrived with infections and sepsis."

At the hospital, foreign doctors attended between 300 to 320 patients daily and 80 percent of the surgeries were amputations, the ministry added.

Peru has sent 18 doctors to collaborate on the humanitarian aid work in Haiti. Peruvian rescuers and doctors arrived in Haiti boarding the first planes loaded with humanitarian aid.
