Peruvian President Alan Garcia arrived on Tuesday noon in Chile with three planeloads of relief supplies for victims of Saturday's massive earthquake.

The aid included a makeshift field hospital, medicines and tents.

"We bring a message of fraternity, sympathy and support to Chilean people," Garcia told local press.

Garcia said Peru has also suffered from many natural disasters, so solidarity is needed, and even more when it is about a "brother and close country like Chile."

Garcia also expressed his conviction that Chile will recover from this adversity.

"In the name of all the Peruvian people and the government, I reaffirm that we need to strengthen our fraternity, closeness, and at these moments of need, work for the real unity of the people," Garcia said.

Thanking Garcia for his solidarity, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said: "This shows good neighboring relations and solidarity."

To the moment, there have been 500 Peruvian expatriates in Chile reportedly affected by the 8.8-magnitude earthquake. They are waiting for humanitarian aid and quick repatriation.

Saturday's devastating earthquake has left at least 795 people dead and affected 2 million people, according to the latest official figures.
