A tsunami warning issued for Russia's Pacific coast after a powerful earthquake in Chile has been lifted since the waves reaching the peninsula of Kamchatka were very small, said local emergency officials on Sunday.

Specialists in Kamchatka have registered a maximum 30 cm rise of the water level in the area, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

An official from the local tsunami prevention center said the waves posed no threat to residents.

"Gauges installed in the Vodopadnaya area continue registering the increases and decreases of the water levels and the process is still going on, but any dangerous phenomena are out of the question," the unnamed official was quoted as saying.

A tsunami warning that forecast waves up to two meters had forced people to evacuate from the islands, said the RIA Novosti news agency.

The volcanic Kamchatka Peninsula, a 1,250-km long peninsula in Russia's Far East, lies between the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Sea of Okhotsk to the west.

The 8.8-magnitude Chilean quake on Saturday has left more than 300 people dead.

Countries and regions on the Pacific were on high alert against a tsunami triggered by the earthquake.
