ROME, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Italian cuisine has been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as part of the world's intangible cultural heritage, Italian authorities announced on Wednesday.

In a statement, the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests said that the inscription of Italian cooking on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity was officially approved by UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee in New Delhi, India.

It stated that Italian cuisine was listed for its culinary practices, gastronomic qualities, and its social and historical significance as a communal tradition that enables people to share food culture, flavors, skills and memories across generations.

According to UNESCO, Italian cooking is a cultural and social blend of culinary traditions, the element is associated with the use of raw materials and artisanal food preparation techniques.

Moreover, It gives communities an outlet to share their history and describe the world around them. It also helps safeguard specific cultural expressions, such as language and gestures.

In a video message to UNESCO, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the recognition was a historic achievement that honors the Italian people, celebrates their identity and highlights a lifestyle admired around the world.

"For us Italians, cuisine is not just food or a collection of recipes. It is much more than that: it is culture, tradition, work and well-being," she said.

Italian Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida said the recognition was a collective award for Italian society, including "the families who pass on ancient flavors, the farmers who preserve the land, the producers who work with passion, and the restaurateurs who bring the authentic value of Italy to the world."

According to the Foreign Ministry of Italy, the nomination was submitted to UNESCO in 2023. In 2024, Italian agri-food exports reached a record 68 billion euros (79.5 billion U.S. dollars), an increase of more than 8 percent.
