DAMASCUS, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Syria's defense authorities and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) traded accusations Thursday over renewed clashes east of Aleppo, just two days after both sides agreed to a ceasefire.
The defense authorities' media directorate said SDF units "targeted Syrian army positions near the Tishreen Dam," killing one soldier and wounding several others. It said the SDF "breached the ceasefire agreement more than 10 times in less than 48 hours" by attacking army deployment lines in eastern Aleppo.
The statement accused the SDF of "continuing fortification and mobilization along all axes," adding that intercepted communications revealed "calls for attacks against army and security positions in Aleppo."
In response, the SDF's Media Center denied initiating the hostilities, claiming instead that "a group of Damascus government fighters attempted to infiltrate one of our positions near the Tishreen Dam this morning." The statement said SDF fighters "immediately engaged the attackers," killing one and forcing the rest to flee, leaving a body behind at the scene.
"Our forces exercised their legitimate right to self-defense to repel the threat and thwart the infiltration attempt," the SDF said, reaffirming their commitment to protecting local residents and maintaining stability in the area.
The renewed hostilities mark the latest test of the fragile ceasefire brokered earlier this week between Syrian defense authorities chief Marhaf Abu Qusra and SDF commander Mazloum Abdi following days of fierce fighting in Aleppo's Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah neighborhoods.
No independent confirmation of the casualties or the extent of the new clashes was immediately available. Enditem
