MEXICO CITY, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Wednesday that the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is legally binding in all three countries, and any attempt to modify it will require a "very thorough review."

The president's comment came after U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the trade treaty could be "renegotiated ... or we can simply make different agreements ... We are allowed to make different agreements if we want to. We could make agreements that are better for each country."

Mexico has "no additional information on how the revisions" to the trilateral agreement "will be carried out," Sheinbaum said at her daily morning press conference.

"The 50 points raised by the United States regarding what they consider to be Mexico's problems with the trade agreement" are being analyzed, she said.

The USMCA, which is up for a periodic review, could see bilateral meetings take place between the signatories. Sheinbaum said she will request "a call with President Trump" if need be.

The three USMCA partners began public consultations on the agreement last month, with an eye to starting the deal's review process in January 2026. Enditem
