MAPUTO, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Mozambique has inaugurated the 12th National Festival of Culture in the city of Tete, an event that has brought together more than 1,200 participants from across the country.
The festival, held every two years, is regarded as Mozambique's main cultural gathering. Over the next five days, artists, musicians and cultural groups will present performances, exhibitions and discussions highlighting both traditional and contemporary forms of expression.
Culture is a key pillar of unity, peace and national development, said President Daniel Chapo, who officially opened the event in Tete on Monday, 1,000 km north of Maputo, the capital.
"Our culture is not just about dance and music," he said. "It is about building unity, shaping our identity and reinforcing peace."
Chapo emphasized the importance of youth participation, noting that their active role in producing culture strengthens Mozambique's identity and ensures that traditions are preserved and renewed.
He said the festival should serve as a platform for dialogue and solidarity among Mozambicans.
Organized under the theme "50 Years of Consolidating National Unity and Peace Through Culture," the festival features artistic showcases, craft fairs and debates intended to foster cultural exchange between provinces.
Since its inception, the National Festival of Culture has been a key event on Mozambique's cultural calendar, promoting diversity and reinforcing the values of national cohesion. Enditem
