KABUL, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan commemorated the 106th anniversary of its independence from British colonial rule on Tuesday, honoring the historic milestone with ceremonies and a public holiday.
In an official statement, the Afghan interim government said, "One hundred and six years ago, with divine assistance and through resolute struggle, the proud Muslim people of Afghanistan compelled the British Empire to recognize the nation's full independence, restoring control over its foreign policy to the Afghan people."
The statement also highlighted subsequent victories against the Soviet Union and the U.S. occupation, underscoring Afghanistan's enduring spirit of resistance.
The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs declared a public holiday to mark the occasion, while the Ministry of National Defense organized a special ceremony.
