VILNIUS, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- The average wholesale electricity price in Lithuania more than doubled last week to 81 euros (93.96 U.S. dollars) per megawatt-hour (MWh) from the previous week, driven by heatwaves in Central Europe and Scandinavia, Lithuania's electricity transmission system operator Litgrid said Monday.
Deividas Siksnys, head of market development at Litgrid, said that due to a shorter working week and consistently warm, sunny weather, Lithuania recorded the lowest electricity consumption in more than two years.
Despite low domestic demand and rising supply, high prices across Europe pushed electricity prices in Lithuania higher, he noted.
"While we were enjoying great weather in Lithuania, Central Europe and Scandinavia were experiencing heatwaves, which led to increased demand for cooling. High electricity prices across Europe also translated into higher prices here, despite low demand and growing supply," the Baltic News Service (BNS) quoted him as saying.
Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia synchronized their power grids with Western Europe on Feb. 9.
According to Litgrid, 159 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity were generated in Lithuania last week, up 25 percent from 127 GWh the week before, while consumption fell by 9 percent to 182 GWh, down from 200 GWh. Enditem
