ADEN, Yemen, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Yemeni Prime Minister Salem bin Buraik on Tuesday emphasized that achieving lasting peace in Yemen requires "addressing the fundamental causes of the ongoing conflict," particularly ending what he termed "the Houthi coup," and recognizing the militia's destabilizing impact on Yemen and the broader region.
The newly-appointed prime minister made the remarks during a meeting with Hans Grundberg, the UN secretary-general's special envoy for Yemen, in the country's southern port city of Aden, according to Yemen's state TV.
Bin Buraik reiterated that Yemen's government remains committed to the peace process and continues to support all initiatives aimed at achieving comprehensive, just, and sustainable peace.
The meeting focused on ongoing UN efforts to revive Yemen's stalled political process, during which Grundberg briefed the prime minister on his recent diplomatic activities and contacts at regional and international levels, which aim to break the current deadlock in Yemen's political situation.
The envoy also reaffirmed UN's commitment to pursuing mediation efforts toward reaching a comprehensive political solution that would improve the humanitarian and economic conditions for the Yemeni people.
Grundberg arrived in Aden late Monday. Speaking to reporters upon his arrival at Aden International Airport, Grundberg said despite ongoing regional tensions, Yemen is currently experiencing a state of "relative calm" on the domestic front. He described the situation as "a positive sign that calls for intensified efforts to find sustainable solutions, particularly in the economic and security sectors."
Yemen has been engulfed in conflict since 2014 when Houthi forces seized control of the capital Sanaa and much of the country's north, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in support of the internationally recognized government in 2015.
The war has created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with millions of Yemenis facing food insecurity and lacking access to basic services. Multiple rounds of peace talks have failed to produce a political settlement. Enditem
