MOGADISHU, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The African Union Commission (AUC) and United Nations (UN) on Tuesday hailed several achievements made by Somalia in peace and stability as the country marked its 65th anniversary of independence.
In a congratulatory message, UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Somalia James Swan said that Somalia has much to be rightfully proud of, including achievements in advancing peace, prosperity, and governance despite facing great challenges.
"On behalf of the UN family in Somalia, I wish all Somalis 'hambalyo,' on this significant day, and reaffirm the UN's commitment to supporting Somalia as it strives for even greater progress in the years to come," he added in a statement issued in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.
In a separate statement, AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf recalled that the Independence Day stands as a proud testament to the unity, resilience, and determination of the Somali people, who on July 1, 1960, came together in pursuit of sovereignty, dignity, and self-determination.
Youssouf said the journey since has been marked by courage, perseverance, and a commitment to building a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous Somalia.
"As you commemorate this important milestone, I pay tribute to the generations of Somalis whose sacrifices made this day possible. I reaffirm the African Union's enduring solidarity with Somalia as you continue to advance your national priorities," he said.
The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) said that Tuesday's independence commemoration provides an opportunity to reflect and celebrate the tremendous milestones achieved by Somalia in its quest for lasting peace and stability.
AUSSOM reaffirmed its support for Somalia's ongoing peace and stabilization efforts, noting that Somalia's resilience and steadfast determination remain a key inspiration to the country's continued growth and prosperity. Enditem
