WARSAW, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Monday that the government is considering reinstating border controls on the country's borders with Germany and Lithuania in response to concerns over illegal migration.

At a press conference, Tusk said he would be holding a briefing with the leadership of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, the Border Guard, the military, and the police to assess the situation at all of Poland's borders. He emphasized that securing Poland's borders remains a top priority for his administration.

"We have informed the German side that if questionable cases continue to arise, we may be forced to restore controls on the Polish-German border," Tusk said, stressing that any decisions would be made in a way that minimizes disruption for Polish citizens.

The Prime Minister also stated that measures would be taken to prevent individuals from illegally crossing into Poland from Lithuanian territory.

Germany had already introduced temporary border checks in October 2023 in an effort to curb illegal migration. Polish opposition lawmakers have claimed that German authorities are returning migrants to Poland without following proper procedures.

Polish President Andrzej Duda also criticized the government's current migration policy, asserting that Poland cannot allow migrants to be "brutally pushed" into the country from Germany. "Germany created this migration problem and must deal with it on their own. We will not solve it for them," he said on Monday during a briefing in Seville, Spain.

Tusk rejected accusations that Poland is being overwhelmed by illegal migrants from the West. He added that each individual case is being thoroughly investigated. Enditem
