Maria van der Hoeven, Executive Director of International Energy Agency (IEA), said on Wednesday that she is proud of the China's commitment to greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

And she added that she is confident that China can guarantee the security of energy supply and simultaneously control the pollution and carbon dioxide emission.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Barack Obama Wednesday announced both countries' respective post-2020 actions on climate change in Beijing.

China intends to achieve the peaking of greenhouse gas emissions around 2030 and increase the share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption to around 20 percent by 2030.

"I think it is a great step forward. When these two countries really join forces, it can has a very positive impact on climate negotiation, not only on Paris 2015 (UN climate change conference), but also now here in Lima 2014. Because currently the preparation of Paris 2015 has started now, Lima 2014 is a very important step prior to Paris," said van der Hoeven during an interview with Xinhua after its World Energy Outlook 2014 report launching event in London.

It is an initial announcement, and it needs to be implemented in China and the United States, but Chinese government's resolves on the war against pollution is making its long-term efforts on greenhouse gas control highly expected, stressed van der Hoeven.

"I am really looking forward to the next step and the implementation in China, as well as in the U.S. It's very promising, and I am also looking forward to how the world will react on this announcement, and how it would impact on the negotiation in Paris," she said.

She also said she is confident that China can deal with the dilemma between the energy supply security and carbon dioxide emission reduction.

She cited three reasons to support her confidence: Chinese government's commitment to control the pollution, its huge investment and implementation on renewable energy, and its ambitious plan on energy efficiency.
