India testfires BrahMos supersonic cruise missile

India on Sunday successfully testfired its BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from a warship off the coast of the western state of Goa, sources said.
"The testfiring was successful. The 290-km range missile was fired by the Indian Navy from INS Teg warship and it hit the target ship accurately on the Arabian Sea," the sources said.
BrahMos, the world's fastest cruise missile in operation, is capable of carrying a conventional warhead of 300 kg. The missile travels at speeds of Mach 2.8 to 3.0.
The land-launched and ship-launched versions of the missile are already in service with air-launched and submarine-launched versions currently under testing phase.
The supersonic cruise missile project is actually a joint venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation and Russia's NPO Mashinostroeyenia.
