The Arab League (AL) on Monday urged the United Nations to hold an emergency meeting on Syria to discuss cutting diplomatic ties with the Arab country.

In a joint statement issued early Monday after their meeting in Doha, AL foreign ministers urged Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down and promised a "safe exit" for him and his family if he agrees to give up power.

The statement called for an extraordinary meeting of the UN General Assembly to work toward creating "security zones" and "humanitarian corridors" in Syria and called on different political factions of Syria to set up a transitional government if Assad steps down.

The league also promised 100 million U.S. dollars for Syrian refugees in neighboring countries.

The AL ministerial meeting opened?in Doha?late Saturday to discuss ways to deal with the Syrian crisis.
