China is using multiple channels and making every possible effort to rescue a group of Chinese workers abducted in Sudan, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Monday.

Spokesman Liu Weimin made the remarks at a daily press briefing when giving an update on the 29 Chinese workers who were abducted in Sudan following an attack by local rebels on Jan. 28.

Chinese diplomatic officials recently managed to talk to the abducted nationals over the telephone, Liu said, adding that they are in good health and of stable mind.

The spokesman said relevant rescue work is still underway.

China's Vice Foreign Minister Xie Hangsheng on Jan. 31 summoned Sudan's Charge d'Affaires in Beijing and lodged urgent representations to the African country after a group of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA)/northern sector attacked the camp belonging to a Chinese company doing roadwork in South Kordofan State and abducted 29 Chinese nationals.

China has sent a working group to Sudan to aid in the rescue.
