Israel freed 550 Palestinian prisoners on Sunday evening in the second phase of a prisoner swap deal, while Hamas movement announced the Palestinian-Israeli agreement reached in October had been finalized.

Abu Obeida, spokesman of Hamas armed wing Izedin al-Qassam Brigades, told reporters in Gaza, "I'm here to announce that the prisoner swap deal has been finalized after the male and female prisoners were freed from the prisons of the Israeli occupation."

The 550 prisoners were taken by buses heading for Palestinian territories. 509 of the prisoners are from the West Bank under the rule of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), while 41 are from the Gaza Strip governed by Hamas.

Relatives and friends of the prisoners, as well as PNA officials and other factions' representatives gathered at President Mahmoud Abbas' headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah, while dozens other people gathered at the crossing point between Gaza and Israel to greet the prisoners.

The 550 prisoners are set free in line with the second and last phase of the swap deal. The first batch of 477 prisoners, most of whom were Hamas militants and leaders, were released on Oct. 18.

According to the Egypt-brokered agreement, Hamas freed the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit abducted in a cross-border raid in June 2006 for the return of 1,027 Palestinian prisoners. Shalit was released during the first phase of the deal.

None of the 550 prisoners released Sunday are members of Hamas or Islamic Jihad. Instead, most of them are members of Abbas' Fatah party and other factions of Palestine Liberation Organization and have not been involved in direct killing of Israelis.

"Contrary to the first phase, the occupier (referring to Israel) is the one that chose the names of the freed prisoners in the second phase," said Abu Obeida. "Israel is trying to create division among the factions, but we say that we welcome the release of any prisoners regardless of their political affiliations."

Buses full of 509 prisoners arrived at al-Muqataa, the headquarters of Abbas, and were received by PNA officials and the Speaker of the Palestinian parliament Aziz Dweik.

The first thing the freed prisoners did was to visit the grave of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

Chief secretary of the Palestinian presidency Tayeb Abdel Rahim and Dweik greeted the freed prisoners and expressed hope that other prisoners will also be released soon.

According to official Palestinian figures, there are around 6, 000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons.

In the Gaza Strip, 41 prisoners were taken by a bus to Krem Shalom crossing point between Gaza Strip and Israel, and then the bus crossed into the Gaza enclave. Dozens of relatives and friends greeted the prisoners.

"Our people will be happy for the release of the prisoners, any prisoners, regardless of who they are, whether during the day or at midnight," said Abu Obeida, adding that "finalizing the deal is a big achievement for all our people."
