A powerful earthquake measuring on a 5.8 magnitude on the Richter scale hit Nicaragua's southern region on Monday with no injuries or damages being reported so far, an official source said.

The Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) said the earthquake's epicenter was located at 66 kilometers in southeast Managua, with a depth of 164 km.

The earthquake began at 16:35 p.m. local time (22:35 GMT) and was felt especially in Rivas, a southern Nicaraguan department. The INETER said that this earthquake was caused by the collision of the tectonic plates of Cocos and the Caribbean.
