UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon and UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Nassir Abdulaziz Al- Nasser are in Tripoli, the capital of Libya, on Wednesday for a surprise visit to the North African country, Ban's spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters.

"During their brief visit they are meeting with members of the National Transitional Council (NTC) and civil society," the spokesman said. "They will also speak to reporters."

The visit, which was not previously announced for security reasons, took place some 10 days after the ruling NTC declared the full liberation of Libya.

The NTC is the temporary governing body of Libya after former leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown and killed in the seven- month conflict.

After his visit to Libya, Ban will travel to Cannes of France, where world leaders are gathering for a meeting of the Group of 20 (G20) major economies.

"The secretary-general will arrive in Cannes this evening," Nesirky said.

The United Nations renewed its commitment to help the Libyan people build a brighter future as the NTC declared full liberation on Oct. 23.
