At least 206 people have been killed in the Mekong River and flash floods hitting in Cambodia since early August, Nhim Vanda, vice president of the National Committee for Disaster Management, announced on Saturday evening.

"As of Saturday, some 206 people have been reported dead by the floods," he told a press briefing at Phnom Penh International Airport when receiving emergency relief from the government of Japan.

"The government of Cambodia has donated 500 U.S. dollars to the families of each dead victim."

He said the floods have inundated 17 cities and provinces.

"It's the worst flood in a decade," he said. More than 230, 000 families have been affected and other 100,000 families have been evaluated to higher grounds.

"In total, more than one million people have been affected by the floods," he said, adding that so far, the government and charitable organizations have distributed relief to about 60,000 families.
