Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi warned that NATO strikes on Libya are devastating the North African country's infrastructure and killing innocent people, the local Press TV reported on Wednesday.

Salehi said Tuesday that supplying weapons to opposition forces in Libya will exacerbate the deadly clashes in the country, according to the report.

NATO's military intervention in Libya was meant to prevent the killing of innocent people, but the number of casualties is increasing in the crisis-torn country, he was quoted as saying.

In June, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for European Affairs Ali Ahani said the intervention was a result of misinterpretation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973.

The Security Council adopted Resolution 1973 on March 17, authorizing member states to take all necessary measures to protect civilians under threat of attacks in Libya, including in the rebel base of Benghazi, while excluding foreign occupation of any form on any part of the Libyan territory.
