At least 10 people were killed and 112 others were wounded in a shooting incident in south Lebanon's village of Maroun al-Ras on the Lebanese-Israeli border, where Palestinians and Lebanese were demonstrating to mark the Nakba Day on Sunday, a security source told Xinhua.

Among the 10 killed, six were protesters, four were Palestinian refugees living in Lebanon, said the source.

A statement issued by the Lebanese Army said troops were given strict orders to remain on high alert, adding that it was closely coordinating with UN troops in south Lebanon to "prevent the Israeli army from targeting the crowds even more and safeguarding Lebanon's sovereignty."

According to the source, Israeli forces had fired in the air to disperse the protesters and the Lebanese Army had fired in the air in an attempt to stop protesters from reaching the border.

UN peacekeepers in south Lebanon urged for calm and "maximum restraint" as the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) intensified contacts with the Lebanese and Israeli sides to contain the incident.

Lebanon's outgoing Prime Minister Saad Hariri condemned Israel' s firing on the protesters, describing it as an "unacceptable attack."
