Yemen's opposition said Sunday it would give President Ali Abdullah Saleh two days to sign the Gulf- brokered initiative for power transition, otherwise it would leave Saleh to face "the people's choice."

"The opposition decided on Sunday to give President Saleh two days as deadline to sign the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) power- transition initiative. Otherwise we will leave Saleh to the people's choice, which we would support," opposition spokesman Mohamed Qahtan told Xinhua.

Qahtan refused to elaborate further, but hinted to spur escalating street protests to reject any initiative that grants Saleh immunity from prosecution rather than demands an immediate end of his rule.

The opposition also issued a statement on Sunday, clarifying that they were "clinging to the GCC initiative, which was announced on April 21, considering that any postponement by the ruling party to sign the deal would not benefit the political reconciliation process."

Three-month-long protest rallies continued on Sunday in Yemen's major provinces, including the capital Sanaa, to repeat their refusal to the GCC initiative and to reiterate demands for an immediate end to the 33-year rule of Saleh.
