Russia is in full control of the situation in its Far East with regard to possible radiation leaks from the quake-stricken nuclear reactors on the northeast coast of Japan, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Saturday.

Russia has sufficient control of the "radiation situation" in its Far East, Putin said at the inauguration of the "Dalneye" gas station in Uzhno-Sahalinsk in the Pacific island of Sakhalin (Kuye), Russia media reported on Sunday.

After the ceremony, Putin watched Russian oil giant Gazprom's presentation of projects for East Siberia and the Far East.

On Saturday, Putin chaired a meeting on the development of Russia's nuclear power sector amid the crisis at Japan's nuclear plants.

During the meeting, Putin asked local authorities to establish an energy complex for Russia's Far East.

It is necessary to speed up the construction of oil refining plants with a capacity of 10 million tons per year, he said.

Annual gas production in Russia's Far East will reach 100 billion cubic meters by 2020 from 70 billions cubic meters, he added.
