Protesters and tanks were withdrawing from the Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo Saturday night as ambulances rushed the injured to hospitals.

Tens of thousands of protesters started converging at the square from Saturday morning before the demonstration reached its peak in the evening. People shouted "Ouster Mubarak" around tanks in a peaceful protest.

"No government official is listening to us this evening, so I will continue to protest tomorrow," a computer engineer, who gave his name as Ahmad, told Xinhua, explaining as he was leaving and headed for home.

"Another reason is that I'm worried about my families. There are reports that prisoners escaped from jails and started to vandalize and steal in the streets," he added.

While thousands were leaving, others stayed. Ambulances were seen to take in the injured and rush them to hospitals. A Xinhua reporter saw scores of wounded people were taken to a nearby mosque for treatment.

"Three people died today after being shot and beaten by the police. Dozens of others were taken here, some of them seriously injured," said doctor Imam.
