In his State of the Union address scheduled Tuesday night, U.S. President Barack Obama is to call for bipartisanship in dealing with the challenges facing the country, according to excerpts released in advance by the White House.

"With their votes, the American people determined that governing will now be a shared responsibility between parties. New laws will only pass with support from Democrats and Republicans," the excerpts said.

"We will move forward together, or not at all -- for the challenges we face are bigger than party, and bigger than politics."

Obama has been trying to project himself as a dealmaker between Democrats and Republicans and calling for bipartisanship after the midterm elections, in which Democrats lost control of the House of Representatives and kept a slimmer majority in the Senate.
