The top U.S. military officer is due in Seoul for consultations with his South Korean counterpart over the recent artillery bombardment on a South Korean island by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said Tuesday.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, is set to meet with South Korea's JCS chief Gen. Han Min-koo in Seoul on Wednesday, accompanied by other military commanders from both sides including Gen. Walter Sharp, commander of U.S. forces stationed in South Korea, according to the JCS.

The leaders are expected to evaluate security situation on the Korean peninsula following what Seoul and Washington said was an unprovoked attack by the DPRK on Nov. 23 on a South Korean island near the disputed maritime border between the two Koreas off the west coast of the peninsula, killing two South Korean marines and two civilians.

They will also discuss countermeasures against Pyongyang's provocation, which will be announced afterwards.

Pyongyang said its attack was for self-defense and was provoked by the South Korean artillery shelling into its territorial waters.
