Ninety Taliban militants gave up militancy and surrendered to government in Afghanistan's northern Baghlan province on Wednesday, Afghan army commander in the region said.

"Ninety Taliban including their commanders Mullah Mohammad Daud and Mullah Shir Aqa handed over their weapons to authorities this morning and resumed normal life in the community," Brigadier- General Zalmai Wesa told Xinhua.

These former militants were active in Dand-e-Ghori, Dand-e- Shahabdin, Pul-e-Kokchinar and some more villages outside the provincial capital Pul-e-Khumri, he added.

"With joining of our dissatisfied brothers to community the peace process would be accelerated and government control will be further strengthened in Baghlan province and adjoining areas," the official further said.

Taliban militants have yet to make comment.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has set up a 70-member High Council for Peace in September this year to speed up peace talks with Taliban militants and boost national reconciliation process to end the Taliban-led protracted insurgency in the central Asian state.
