Fatah said Friday that its rival Hamas had decided not to reach an agreement with it on reconciliation.

"I do not want to talk in public about what happened during the meeting two days ago, but Hamas has broken its promise not to speak to the mass media," Azzam al-Ahmad, a member of the Palestinian Fatah movement Central Committee said at the sixth anniversary of former Palestinian president Yasser Arafat's death.

A Hamas source said Thursday that the meeting with the rival Fatah party has led to nothing.

Hamas and Fatah held a second round of reconciliation talks in Damascus on Tuesday to discuss ways to share Palestinian security forces.

The two major Palestinian organizations met in Damascus in September. They differed on arrangements of the security issue which is the last obstacle in ending disputes.

Hamas and Fatah have been engaged in a sour power struggle since the Islamic movement swept its rival secular Fatah in legislative elections in 2006.

Last year, Egypt suspended its mediation role, and ties between Cairo and Hamas have deteriorated after Hamas rejected the Egyptian-drafted proposal, raising reservations involving security and elections.

The senior Fatah official pointed out that the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) led by Mahmoud Abbas refused Washington's pressures over signing an agreement with Hamas.
