A train carrying 123 tons of nuclear waste finally arrived at its destination in northern Germany on Tuesday after a journey that was delayed by tens of thousands of protestors.

The train left France on Friday for Dannenberg, 20 km away from the last storage site near Gorleben, Germany. At Danneberg, the nuclear waste was loaded onto trucks and taken to the storage site.

Police said they dispersed more than 3,000 protestors blocking the way to Gorbleben overnight to ensure smooth transport of the nuclear waste.

The waste will be eventually buried some 860 meters underground in an abandoned salt mine near Gorleben after construction of a storage facility is finished.
