The July 2 tanker accident toll in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has risen to 269, according to the latest report by the Central African country.

By Saturday, the report said, 22 more people had died from severe burns following the fuel tanker mishap at Sange in South Kivu province.

The report was based on partial information from hospitals in the provincial capital Bukavu and elsewhere.

Despite the medical treatment, only six patients have survived out of the dozens initially received by the Bukavu general hospital. Most have succumbed to their injuries, the report said.

Other medical institutions have also witnessed an increased toll. At Panzi hospital, for instance, out of the 18 patients transferred there, eight have died.

The doctor in charge of emergency medication in this hospital said the other 10 survivors benefitted from appropriate health care, thanks to the high-quality pharmaceutical products offered by a Belgian team.

In Uvira and Sange hospitals, the figures have not yet been released.

A medic at Panzi hospital, who declined to be identified, said most well-wishers were calling for the dissolution of the Crisis Management Unit for what they termed as unfair distribution of medical supplies.
