The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Tuesday issued a statement rejecting the Group of 8 (G8)'s position of linking the "Cheonan" case with the DPRK.

The DPRK "vehemently and totally refutes" the position of the recent G8 summit which linked the DPRK with South Korea's investigation results on the "Cheonan" case, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a statement, as quoted by the official news agency KCNA.

The 1,200-ton South Korean naval vessel "Cheonan," with 104 crew members onboard, sank in waters off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula on March 26, leaving 46 sailors dead.

South Korea accused the DPRK of sinking the warship with a torpedo after a multinational investigation, but the DPRK has denied any involvement.

The recent G8 summit in Canada voiced support for the South Korean position on the issue and also criticized the DPRK's nuclear program.

The DPRK foreign ministry spokesman said the G8 hastily handled the case in a deliberate manner only to show its pursuit for "a sinister political purpose," adding that the group should "give its way to the G20."
