Chinese VP meets Australian leaders

Visiting Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping met with John Hogg, President of the Senate, Harry Jenkins, Speaker of the of Representatives, and Australian Opposition leader Tony Abbott on Monday.

The Chinese vice-president said Sino-Australian relations enjoy good trend with frequent exchanges of high-ranking officials of the two sides. Mutual trust between China and Australia have been deepened, trade cooperation developed rapidly in recent years. Cooperation in areas of education, technology, culture, tourism have been fruitful.

He said both countries kept close consultations and exchanges in addressing global financial crisis, climate change and promoting regional cooperation. China is willing to work with Australia to deepen dialogues and cooperation, promoting a mutual beneficial and all-rounded relations on the basis of mutual trust.

In meeting with Hogg and Jenkins, Xi sent regards of Wu Bangguo, Chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee. He said China's people's congress and Australian parliament enjoy friendly relations and play irreplaceable role in promoting people to people understanding and friendship.

Xi said the two sides should work in joint efforts to strengthen exchanges in legislation and to work out new ways to deepen the existing cooperation of mutual benefits. He said focus can be made in youth exchanges in legislation sector in the future.

In meeting with Tony Abbott, Xi said the Liberal party has been sticking to a friendly policy toward China for a long-time, no matter it is in office or not. He gave appreciation to the party's active efforts in promoting Sino-Australian relations which are crucial and already an important composition of the relations.

Xi said China's Communist Party would love to strengthen exchanges and communication with all major parties in Australia including the Liberal Party on the basis of independence, equality, mutual respect and noninterference in each other's internal affairs.

Hogg and Jenkins thanked Xi for sending Wu's regards and warmly welcomed him on behalf of the Senate and House of Representatives. Hogg said, Sino-Australian relations are the one of strength and constant development which will play important role in keeping stability in the region and the world.

He said the Senate is committed to viewing the relations from a strategic and long-term perspective and would like to extend cooperation with People's Ccongress of China? and support the development of relations.

Jenkins said Vice-President Xi's visit symbolizes the strength of relations. The House of Representatives is having close relationship with the People's Congress of China by signing a Memorandum of Understanding. He said the House of Representatives would like to further promoting Sino-Australian relations, especially between young MPs.

Opposition leader Tony Abbot said Australia has learned a lot from China's robust development in recent years and its way of addressing financial crisis. The Liberal Party will support cooperation with China and conduct more exchanges between the parties. Therefore, he said the party can make efforts in building peace and prosperity in Asia-Pacific region and promoting relations between China and Australia.
