The volcanic activity in the glacier Eyjafjallajokull in South Iceland is continuing but with somewhat less force than before, according to a statement from the Icelandic government website on Tuesday evening.

The behavior of the eruption has changed as the amount of ash has reduced substantially, said the statement.

"Icelandic civil protection authorities have the situation as regards public response fully under control and are providing citizens in adjacent areas to the volcano with necessary assistance," the statement added.

Ash has fallen in the vicinity of Eyjafjallajokull area but is not expected to reach the capital area or other parts of the country, the statement said.

News from Faculty of Earth Sciences at University of Iceland said that the latest result from GPS stations around Eyjafjallajokull show deflation associated with the eruption. There is no movements associated with the Katla volcano, which is one of the active volcanoes in Iceland.
