Special report: Unrest in Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev said Monday that he is willing to negotiate with the country's interim government formed by the opposition, the state-run Kyrgyz news agency reported.

Bakiyev, who was forced to flee the capital city following nation wide protests last week, made the gesture at a news conference in a town in the southern province of Jalalabad.

The president also asked for the deployment of UN peacekeepers in the Central Asian country, citing the country's policeforce and defense troops were already paralysed.

Responsing to the news that the interim government would take action against him, Bakiyev warned that any attempt to seize or kill him would result in more bloodshed.

He also denied having ordered police to fire into the crowds of opposition protesters who were attempting to storm into the presidential office in central Bishkek last week.

Dozens of people died and hundreds more were injured last Wednesday when police fired gunshots into the crowds of protesters outside the presidential office in a bid to disperse them.
