The European Union (EU) on Monday condemned the two deadly explosions in Moscow's subway system.

"We cannot allow violence to prevail against freedom and democracy," European Comssion President Jose Manuel Barroso said in a statement.

Barroso expressed his "sincere condolences and solidarity" to Russian President Demitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and the families of the victims of the explosions.

"People have a right to feel safe as they go about their daily lives," the statement said, adding that the European Union stands resolutely together with the Russian authorities in its efforts to counter terrorism in all its forms.

At least 37 people died and more than 100 were injured after two female suicide bombers attacked two Moscow subway stations during the morning rush hours.
